When my clients share a dream request with me, I will often respond with the same phrase. “Everything is possible.” It’s rare that I come across an idea or project specification that is impossible. Over the last 20 years, I have pushed myself to not accept limitations when it comes to custom development. Technology is amazing and we live in an amazing time of accessibility to brilliant technological resources. Between integration of third party resources and the vast possibilities of open source technology, almost everything you can dream up in automation and online processes can be done with a little ingenuity and determination.
Although, if you ask any of my clients, they will tell you that the next words to come out of my mouth are often “but not everything is cost effective.” My focus for my customers is providing an optimal solution for best outcomes of growth and long term development. We do this through phased development and heavily relying on code integration over code development. There are a lot of benefits of designing a system from the ground up, but there is also a huge benefit to community supported software and not “reinventing the wheel”. My goal is to balance a project to heavily take advantage of every available community based support (open source software) and cost effective premium software solutions to arrive at a solution that is well supported long term without relying on continued custom support.
